Radio Garden allows listeners to explore broadcasting and hearing identities worldwide.
In the Live section, you can explore the entire globe through radios, as they are broadcasting right now. Tune into any place by scrolling the planet with your mouse: is there anything that sounds familiar? Or foreign? Where would you like to travel and what sounds like ‘home’? Which culture would you like to discover today?
In the History section, you can tune into clips that show how radio has tried to cross borders. How have people tried to translate their cultures and nations into the airwaves? What are they saying to the world?
Click over to the Jingles section to take a trip through the jingles of every radio to see how each station identifies itself.
Radio Garden incorporates results from the international research project Transnational Radio Encounters directed by Golo Föllmer at Martin-Luther University Halle, in co-operation with the Universities of Copenhagen and Aarhus in Denmark, London Metropolitan and the University of Sunderland in the UK, and Utrecht University in the Netherlands. The project was funded by HERA (Humanities in the European Research Area) from 2013-2016.
